November 2015

  • [15.11.02] The Science Council has published a report outlining a new system for resource allocation to universities called FOKUS. The department has the opportunity to comment on this report (via the faculty) before the 9th of November.

September 2015

  • [15.08.19] Elections for the Department Board and Prefekt for the period 2016-2018 will take place this fall. The elections will me made in two steps. First, a nominating committee (consisting of at least two teachers and one other) will be elected in September. This committee will then put together a suggestion for a new board and a new prefekt, before the final election will take place in November. If you have suggestions for employees who you think should be on the nominating committee, please send them to the Prefekt. The employees who are eligible to vote are listed here Please look through the list and let the prefekt know if you suspect someone is missing (note that PhD students should not be included in this list).
  • [15.06.11] Negotiations are under way for new salaries from October 2015. All employees (except PhD students) are welcome to book an appointment with the Prefekt to discuss their individual salaries.

August 2015

  • [15.01.23] The faculty is accepting nominations for the Oscar II award for best PhD thesis. Deadline is 24th of March. Nominations should be sent to the prefect a week before the deadline.

  • [15.01.14] VR (together others) has a new application system called Prisma. It is quite time consuming to register yourself (to set up your CV, and publication list, etc.) and it is advisable to do so well before any deadline. Knut Deppert has put together a few slides to show how it is done.
  • [14.08.20] At least one in every fifteen employees at a department must have First aid/CPR training. If you are interested (and you should be!), please sign up for such a course. See announcement (in Swedish) for details.
  • [14.06.03] There is now a new calendar function connected to the physics portal. To make sure seminars and meetings are properly listed there you should use the indico system at the physics department. The system is fairly self-explanatory (log in with Lucat-id, click creat event, ...) and there is a short manual (in Swedish).
  • [14.05.21] The physics and astronomy undergraduate teaching committee (IGU) are discussion whether to change the grading system on courses from U-G-VG to A-F. This will be discussed in a general meeting of the department on the 4th of June (15:15 in Lundmark).   • [14.10.13] The ÅForsk foundation has a yearly prize for achievements in the dissemination of knowledge from universities in Sweden. Nominations should be sent through the prefect to the faculty before December 12th.

  • [14.08.22] The University is seeking nominations for the Gilbert Medal and U21 Award for important contributions to the internationalisation of higher education. Please inform your prefekt if you have suitable candidates.

  • [14.03.26] The LKM foundation are organizing a seminar in Björkliden for young researchers to stimulate interdiciplinary exchange. Contact the prefect if you are interested.
  • [14.03.20] The replies to the Psycho-social safety Questinnaier has now been summarized. The results will be discussed in the Health and safety group where possible actions will be suggested.
  • [14.03.17] The ERC advanced grants will be will be launched in June with application deadline on October 21. On Friday May 9 at 10.30 (sharp) there will be an seminar about this grant in Lundmarksalen. Registration for the seminar is not needed, but an e-mail to Teresia.Rindefjall@… if you are planning to attend is appreciated.

  • [14.01.20] A workshop on ERC's program for Consolidator Grants will be held in Lundmarksalen on the 27th of March. The program is aimed towards researchers 7-12 years after their PhD. Register here

  • [13.09.04] The University has announced a new round of their leadership program AKKA V (in Swedish). Application deadline is the 30th of September.
  • [13.09.04] The Faculty has announce this year's Docent course (info in Swedish, but the course is in English). Application deadline is the 11th of October.
  • [13.06.03] Sverker Werin at MAX-Lab has suggested a project where groups of four or five researchers (from PhD students to professors) join together and adopt a school class from an underprivileged area (typically Rosengård in Malmö) for a year. The aim of project is described here (in Swedish). Please contact Leif or Sofia if you are interested.

  • [13.05.06] The faculty has updated the rules for prolongation of PhD positions due to committee work.

  • [13.06.26] The Universitetskanslersämbetet has now published their evaluation of physics degrees in Sweden (in Swedish). Our master in Astrophysics obtain the mark high quality, while both the Bachelor and Master degree in physics obtained lacking in quality. For the two latter, the lacking quality was found for the evaluation point related to the students abilities to in dialogue with different groups of people, orally and in writing clearly describe and discuss their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which these are based.
  • [13.04.02] David Hobbs has written a report on Integrating Research and Teaching with Lund Planetarium.
  • [13.03.22] Sofia Feltzing was awarded the Strömer-Ferrnerska prize by the Science Academy.

  • [12.12.20] The University has a suggestion for a new Open Access policy (in Swedish). If you have comments, send them to me before the 20th of January, and I will forward them to the faculty.
  • [12.12.21] In January we will have elections for the department board for the period 2013-2015, and also elections for the prefectship (which is formally decided by the faculty). Note that the University rules for which employees are considered teachers and technical/administrative personnel has changed, giving the following voting list (röstlängd) (in Swedish) for the coming elections.
  • [12.12.14] Durham University has announced a number of senior research fellowships for up to six months research visits and collaboration. Deadline is 18th of January.

November 2012

  • [12.10.17] This spring all employees were asked to fill out a questionnaire about the working environment at the university. The answers have now been analysed and the results are presented here. On Wednesday the 31st of October we will have a general department meeting where I would like to discuss these results.
  • [12.10.09] The Faculty are accepting nominations for Honorary Doctorats for 2013. Deadline is the 19th of November, but please contact me as soon as possible if you have a nomination.

  • [12.09.05] Finally the Faculty Board has decided to overturn their previous decision to merge the Physics Department and the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics.

  • [12.04.11] The Research Service group is arranging a seminar on Postdoc funding on the 8th of May. See announcement for details.
  • [12.03.28] Five years ago the departments performed a so-called SWOT analysis (Strengths - Weaknesses - Opportunities - Threats). Now these should be updated.   • [12.03.08] The University is accepting nominations for Visiting chair in Hedda Andersson’s name. Deadline is April 30th. See announcement for details.

  • [12.01.10] The deadlines for ERC Advanced Grants and Synergy Grants are the 18th of February and 25th of January respectively. However there are also internal University deadlines to allow for the administration to supply relevant documents, as outlined here. You will need a Statement of Commitment from the prefekt, and here are the submission forms for the Adnvanced Grant and Synergy Grant respectively with some university related information filled out.
  • [12.01.10] Regarding the move of the faculty office to the astronomy building, the faculty has agreed to the floor plan favored by our department. Next step is that proper blueprints are to be drawn up, followed by a tendering process. During the rest of this year, Sven Huldt will be in charge of clearing out the ground floor and parts of the basement, in preparation for the construction work. A lot of stuff will be thrown away, so it is important that you contact Sven if you know about stuff that must be saved.

February 2012

  • [12.01.26] Every year the University has to report on International Mobility to Statistics Sweden (SCB). For this purpose the department has to fill in these forms. I need all researchers and PhD supervisors to supply me with relevant information about local personnel that has spent periods of at least one month (two weeks for PhD students) abroad, or outside people who have spent corresponding time periods with us. I need this information before the 7th of February.
  • [11.12.27] The faculty has issued new rules for accepting PhD students financed by external stipends (in Swedish) here is the form to be used (in Swedish) if you want to accept such students.
  • [11.12.27] Univeristy employees are obliged to report any secondary employment (bisyssla) every year. More information.

  • [11.11.23] The faculty has announced the next round of research infrastructure grants. See announcement and policy for how applications are handled (in Swedish).
  • On Thursday the 19th of January, the new Deans of the faculty will visit the department. A preliminary program for the visit can be found here. Note that all are welcome to the open part of the visit in Lundmarksalen, but that the presentations will be in Swedish.
  • The University is looking for a new pro-Vice Chancellor (the old one has defected to Uppsala). If you are interested, check out the instructions here (in Swedish).
  • The University is working on a strategic plan for collaboration with Arfrican Universities. If you have any collaboration with people from/in Africa, you might want to look into this. More information (in Swedish)

December 2011

  • There is a suggestion for a new matrix of responsibilities for the teaching at the department. Please read it and see if you have any comments before the board meeting on Thursday the 17th of November.
  • Wallenberg Academy Fellows. Information about the call and about the nomination procedure at the faculty is here (in Swedish, note however that the nominations should be written in English). The deadline for sending nominations to the faculty is December 2nd. These nominations should be rated by the department, which is why they should be sent to me at least one week before.
  • The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters calls for nominations for the Kavli Prize 2012.
  • The University has issued new rules for the cost of meals and gifts and stuff, payed for by the department. Here is the Vice chancellors decision and a summary (both in Swedish).
  • The University has issued a new Equal opportunity and diversity policy (in Swedish).
  • The University has come up with a suggestion for a new strategic plan. The university wants comments on this suggestion from the faculties. If you have comments, please send them to me before the 21st of November, and I'll summarize your opinions to the faculty.
  • The Faculty of Science offers the employees full health examinations in 2011. This applies to all employees, also PhD students and postdocs. There are still many time slots available, so please take this opportunity to get a check-up. (more information)

  • The Faculty of science is arranging an introduction meeting for new employees on the 10th of November. See invitation for further information (both invitation and the meeting are sadly only in Swedish).

  • On Wednesday the 9th of November at 13:00 in Lundmarksalen there will be an open hearing with Sven Stafström, the secretary of the science and technology section of the Science Council (VR). See invitation (in Swedish).
  • The University is organizing a seminar on interdisciplinary research on the 14th of November see invitation (in Swedish) for further information
  • The faculty has issued new guidelines (in Swedish) for regulating teaching and administrative duties for PhD students.
  • The University regularly publish a newsletter on environmental issues. here is the latest one (in Swedish). Previous ones can be found here.
  • The eSSENCE strategic research program for e-science (see info in Swedish here) is inviting letters of interest for new projects relating to e-science. See announcement.

October 2011

  • The deadline for the next round of applications to KAW (Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse) is in February. But already now the University has specified a plan for how the applications should be handled internally in the University. Details are found here (in Swedish). Note that the letters of intent should be sent to the faculty for ranking before the 20th of October.
  • STINT has announced a number of stipends for "Excellence in teaching" for going to a university abroad as a guest teacher during the fall term of 2012. The faculty can nominate at most two candidates and need suggestion before September 19th. Contact me if you are interested. The official announcement is here (in Swedish).

September 2011

  • On Wednesday the 31st of August, the project group for the restructuring of how the University should be run in the future visited the faculty to present their suggestions (in Swedish). 8:00 in Lundmarksalen. More information is available on the project home page (in Swedish). The department had until September 6th to give comments on the suggestion to the faculty. Since there was no real consensus in the department I sent the following letter to the faculty.
  • The University has made an investigation about the future of the University library and the report is available here (in Danish!) The steering committee for the Physics and Astronomy library has written a statement (in Swedish) about its view of the conclusions of this investigation, and sent it to the faculty.

  • The physics department history committee has produce a first report (in Swedish).

June 2010

  • The faculty has announced a call for suggestions (in Swedish) for reseach areas for three tenure-track assistant professors (Biträdande universitetsliktorer). Further details on the procedure for the department to rank suggestions has been sent out by mail to all staff.
  • On the 11th of June, there will be a meeting of the science faculty with Per Eriksson, our vice chancellor, to discuss the way money should be distributed for faculty-funded research. The meeting will be at 10:30 in Blå Hallen in the ecology building. All faculty employees are encouraged to come.
  • On the 10th of June, Vinnova will organize an informational meeting about the EU 7th framework program (see announcement in Swedish)
  • The University has issued a new policy about how to handle suspected cheating in research (see the document in Swedish).
  • An inquiry about the organization of the libraries at the faculty has been made by Per Möller. The result can be found here (in Swedish).
  • Nils Ryde has been editing a monthly newsletter for Astronomy with information about new visitors, meetings, dissertations, etc. This newsletter will now become department-wide, and everyone on both sides of Sölvegatan is encouraged to send information to ryde[at]astro.lu.se, who will continue as the editor.
  • The physics department has started a physics history group to present the history of the department for students (and others). Anyone who wants to contribute should read this message (in Swedish)

  • We have announced a temporary position for handling economy at the department after Gun retires. (see announcement in Swedish).
  • We have announced a number of Summer stipends for female students, see the announcement for details (in Swedish).
  • The group investigating the IT services on University level (Samordnat IT-stöd) has produced a report. The faculty have until the 27/4 to comment. Here are the relevant documents (in Swedish)

March 2010

  • On Monday the 15th of March at 10:15, Pontus Melke will defend his PhD thesis Cell Signalling: A Systems approach, in lecture hall F, Theoretical Physics.
  • In weeks 8-11 I will try to have a half-hour meeting (medarbetarsamtal) with each and everyone in the Astronomy building to get to know people and see what worries, plans and dreams are out there. I have started to walk around in the building to book time slots.
  • Teachers and students can apply (before the 15th of March) to go to the U21 Summer School and Undergarduate Researc Conference. See instructions.
  • On the 17th of March, Linda Knutsson (Radiation Physics) will give her Docent lecture. See announcement
