Old News

October 2011

  • The deadline for the next round of applications to KAW (Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse) is in February. But already now the University has specified a plan for how the applications should be handled internally in the University. Details are found here (in Swedish). Note that the letters of intent should be sent to the faculty for ranking before the 20th of October.
  • STINT has announced a number of stipends for "Excellence in teaching" for going to a university abroad as a guest teacher during the fall term of 2012. The faculty can nominate at most two candidates and need suggestion before September 19th. Contact me if you are interested. The official announcement is here (in Swedish).

September 2011

  • On Wednesday the 31st of August, the project group for the restructuring of how the University should be run in the future visited the faculty to present their suggestions (in Swedish). 8:00 in Lundmarksalen. More information is available on the project home page (in Swedish). The department had until September 6th to give comments on the suggestion to the faculty. Since there was no real consensus in the department I sent the following letter to the faculty.
  • The University has made an investigation about the future of the University library and the report is available here (in Danish!) The steering committee for the Physics and Astronomy library has written a statement (in Swedish) about its view of the conclusions of this investigation, and sent it to the faculty.

August 2011

  • The University has made a call for suggestions for female guest professors (In the name of Hedda Andersson). Details are available here (in Swedish).

  • The university has announced new equal-opportunity actions, including among other things money for female guest professors. See announcement (in Swedish).

July 2010

  • We welcome Mandana Shahroodi, who will be taking over a part of Guns old duties, and will replace Caroline during her parental leave.
  • The physics department history committee has produce a first report (in Swedish).

June 2010

  • The faculty has announced a call for suggestions (in Swedish) for reseach areas for three tenure-track assistant professors (Biträdande universitetsliktorer). Further details on the procedure for the department to rank suggestions has been sent out by mail to all staff.
  • On the 11th of June, there will be a meeting of the science faculty with Per Eriksson, our vice chancellor, to discuss the way money should be distributed for faculty-funded research. The meeting will be at 10:30 in Blå Hallen in the ecology building. All faculty employees are encouraged to come.
  • On the 10th of June, Vinnova will organize an informational meeting about the EU 7th framework program (see announcement in Swedish)
  • The University has issued a new policy about how to handle suspected cheating in research (see the document in Swedish).
  • An inquiry about the organization of the libraries at the faculty has been made by Per Möller. The result can be found here (in Swedish).
  • Nils Ryde has been editing a monthly newsletter for Astronomy with information about new visitors, meetings, dissertations, etc. This newsletter will now become department-wide, and everyone on both sides of Sölvegatan is encouraged to send information to ryde[at], who will continue as the editor.
  • The physics department has started a physics history group to present the history of the department for students (and others). Anyone who wants to contribute should read this message (in Swedish)

April 2010

  • We have announced a temporary position for handling economy at the department after Gun retires. (see announcement in Swedish).
  • We have announced a number of Summer stipends for female students, see the announcement for details (in Swedish).
  • The group investigating the IT services on University level (Samordnat IT-stöd) has produced a report. The faculty have until the 27/4 to comment. Here are the relevant documents (in Swedish)
  • VR will accept suggestions for subject areas for rådsforskartjänster (deadline: 3rd of May, see announcement in Swedish)
  • On Friday the 30th of April at 10:15, Patrik Sahlin will defend his PhD thesis Modelling the Development of Phyllotactic Patterns at the Shoot Apical Meristem of Arabidopsis thaliana, in Lundmarksalen.
  • The Faculty board for under graduate education has issued new guidelines for course evaluations (In Swedish)

March 2010

  • On Monday the 15th of March at 10:15, Pontus Melke will defend his PhD thesis Cell Signalling: A Systems approach, in lecture hall F, Theoretical Physics.
  • In weeks 8-11 I will try to have a half-hour meeting (medarbetarsamtal) with each and everyone in the Astronomy building to get to know people and see what worries, plans and dreams are out there. I have started to walk around in the building to book time slots.
  • Teachers and students can apply (before the 15th of March) to go to the U21 Summer School and Undergarduate Researc Conference. See instructions.
  • On the 17th of March, Linda Knutsson (Radiation Physics) will give her Docent lecture. See announcement
  • On the 19th of March, Jostein Kjaerandsen (Biology) will give her Docent lecture. See announcement
  • On the 23rd of March, Christoffer Johansson (Ecology) will give his Docent lecture. See announcement.
  • It is time for all teachers and professors to report any secondary employment (bisyssla) to the University. For those of you who have already done this after November 2008 and if there have been no changes since then you only need to send an email stating this to the personnel department (pers[at] and me (leif.lonnblad[at] All others need to fill out a form in English or Swedish and send it to me.   • Kungl. Skogs- och Lantbruksakademien has announced a number of travel and research grants from Stiftelsen SLO-fonden see announcement at the KSLA home page (In Swedish only)
  • There are travel grants available from the Erasmus program and KAW, both with deadlines on the 15th of March.
  • On the 25th of March, Denis Céolin (Physics) will give his Docent lecture. See announcement
