spin off from ticket #458

Recreate the reported case in #458, i.e., a branch outside '--root' that has no read permission for the typical tester.

Wait with this until 0.7.5 is merged into branch

Seems like we cannot set read permission when accessing repository via ​file://, so I think we drop this. Please reopen if having an idea how to implement this.
