I think we should go for icons from famfamfam.com (same source as BASE uses).

The icons must be (html) linked in somehow and we don't want any third-part links, so the icons should preferably be stored locally. Where should that be so a browser could reach them?

I'm not sure how to include PNGs. A 'go-around' could be to use simple coloring a la 'ls'.

add class dir and file respectively for the <td> and add these classes in css withing the listings class.
