'make check' behaves badly from an distribution package.

Description

Running 'make check' from a tar-ball will fail since some checks depends on that it is run from within a WC, i.e., access to a repository is required for the test to pass.

I think we should consider removing WC dependent stuff in test.

(In [219]) Addresses #85. Problem resolved for dist packages but developers cannot run all tests.
